What to Wear Under a Jacket Without Adding Bulk

Outerwear is the only garment that has to work with clothes it was never chosen alongside. Whatever is underneath got decided first, in a warm room, without the coat in the picture. Getting the two to agree is less about matching and more about managing space.

Spend the Bulk Budget in One Place

A jacket has a fixed amount of room inside it, and every layer takes a share. A thick sweater and a heavy shirt together fill the sleeve long before they fill the body, which is why arms feel restricted while the coat still buttons comfortably. Choose one substantial layer and keep everything under it thin, and the jacket sits the way it was cut to sit.

Watch Where the Two Necklines Meet

The collar of the jacket and the neckline underneath share a small area that draws the eye upward whether you plan it or not. A high crew neck under a standing collar crowds that space and shortens the neck. A lower neckline, or a shirt collar worn open over the jacket's own, leaves it clear. It is a small adjustment with an effect out of proportion to the effort.

Let the Hems Land in Different Places

A jacket that stops within an inch of the top underneath it creates a horizontal line twice in almost the same place, which reads as heavy no matter what the pieces are. Aim for a clear difference: a shorter jacket well above the hem of what is under it, or a longer coat well below. The gap does the work.

Plan for the Open Version and the Closed Version

An outer layer gets worn both ways in a single day, and the two silhouettes are not the same outfit. Open, the coat becomes two vertical lines at the sides and everything underneath is on show. Closed, it is the whole outfit and only the collar and hem of what is beneath it register. Check both in a mirror before you leave, because the version you did not think about is usually the one you spend the afternoon in.

Treat the Outer Layer as the Constant

The coat gets worn far more often than anything under it, which makes it the piece that has to agree with the widest range of things. Choosing it in a color that sits quietly against most of a wardrobe keeps the decisions underneath free, and the stronger colors are better spent on layers that people see less often.

Give a New Piece a Trial Run Indoors

Put a new jacket on over the clothes you actually intend to wear under it, at home, before the tags come off. Reach forward, sit down, and close it. Indoor wear like this keeps you inside the return conditions, and if it turns out to be wrong the return costs you nothing. Our About Us page explains how we describe the weight of each piece, and our Shipping Policy covers how quickly a replacement can reach you.
